Innisfil gardeners celebrate fall with flower, vegetable show

There were enough blooms to award the trophy for Best Gladiolus, which this year went to Jan Drybrough

The hot summer has taken its toll on gardens across Ontario. Most flowering plants have already bloomed and gone to seed – which is why the Innisfil Garden Club’s Fall Flower and Vegetable Show had only 74 entries at the Churchill Community Centre.

Most years, it has more than 100 entries.

At least there were enough blooms to award the trophy for Best Gladiolus, which this year went to Jan Drybrough.

After the judging, garden club members and the public were invited to sit down to tea and a light lunch of sandwiches, vegetables, baked treats, tea, coffee or lemonade, celebrating the bounty of fall.

Among the ribbons awarded:

Best Gladiolus – Jan Drybrough

Best Marigold (over 2 blooms), Best in Show – Jan Drybrough

Best ‘A’ Floral Design, Best in Show – Harvest Moon by Agnes More

Best ‘B’ Floral Design – Verna Sawyer

Best Single Dahlia, Judge’s Choice – Jenni Murrell

The next meeting of the Innisfil Garden Club will take place Monday, Oct. 15 at the Churchill Community Centre in Innisfil, at 7:30 p.m. Guest speaker is Paul Zammit, on planning and planting for all seasons. Refreshments will be served, and all are welcome.
