The Bradford Lions Club hosts an annual Effective Speaking competition in the schools in Bradford West Gwillimbury. The winners not only build their own skills, by speaking in front of their peers, they have the opportunity to advance to Regional and Provincial competition, against speakers sponsored by other Lions Clubs.

On March 2, several young speakers from Bradford went on to the Region 8 competition, hosted by the Elmvale Lions Club.

Bradford's entries did well, securing Firsts.

In Jr. English, Quinn Russell of Bradford took first place, with his speech on Rules. Danielle Schroeder (Wasaga Beach) was second, and Ruby McQueen of Stayner, third.

Intermediate English was won by Raef Boktor of Bradford, speaking on Racism. There was also an impromptu speech, which he won with a lively description of how to walk a dog. Dalaynie Conn of Elmvale was second, Luke Millsap of Alliston was third.

Winner in the Jr. French category was Brooke Davenport of Bradford. Her topic: Confidence.

Thanks go out to all the volunteers that organized the annual competition. The winners go on to District level, which will take place at Collier United Church in Barrie on March 23, at 9:30 a.m. Winners at District will advance to the Provincials in Sarnia, May 4.
