Natural disasters, technological emergencies and human-caused hazards may be beyond our control, but there are ways to reduce the risk and the impact of whatever emergency we might face.
During Emergency Preparedness Week (May 1 to 7), the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit encourages the public to take concrete actions to be better prepared to protect themselves and their families during emergencies.
By taking a few simple steps, you can become better prepared to face a variety of emergencies ranging from natural disasters such as floods, fires and extreme weather, to infrastructure and social crises such as an explosion, hazardous materials incident or civil disorder. To be prepared any time, anywhere, it is important to:
- Know the risks — Although the consequences of disasters can be similar, knowing the risks specific to your community and region can help you better prepare for different types of emergency situations.
- Make a plan — It will help you and your family know what to do.
- Make an emergency kit — During an emergency, we will all need some basic supplies. We may need to get by without power or tap water. Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in an emergency. Preparing an emergency kit now can make a world of difference.

Both the ongoing pandemic and the tornado that ripped through Simcoe-Muskoka last summer illustrate why it is important to have an emergency plan and that we all have a role to play in being prepared.
Preparedness goes a long way to help people cope better — both during and after a major disaster. Within Simcoe-Muskoka, there are many types of risks that residents and visitors may face. Knowing the types of risks and how to prepare for an emergency can help you reduce the impact on your family and property.
