A heat wave did not stop the clients of the Bradford LOFT House from busting a move during their Goodbye Summer barbecue on Tuesday afternoon.
From 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., volunteers and staff celebrated with clients outside the front entrance courtyard of the Bradford LOFT House on Barrie street with live DJ music provided by Scaraoke Entertainment.
Chairs and tables were set up outdoors for the clients to enjoy some sunshine and tunes while being served a hot chicken lunch with home fries, salad and buns, dutifully prepared by the kitchen staff of the LOFT House.
To beat the heat, everyone was treated to ice cream cones and freezies afterwards.
“(It) was wonderful,” shared Karen Frotten, housing support and activation facilitator for the Bradford LOFT House, who volunteered at the barbecue. “The clients are still talking about how much fun they had.”
All throughout the event, clients danced from their chairs by tapping their feet and clapping their hands, while others got up to twirl around and move to the beats of DJ Jacster.
Even the neighbour residents were seen from their balconies doing the YMCA dance during the LOFT’s event.
“It was so nice to see them react to the music and dance,” Frotten said, commenting that many of the clients that have mobility issues were dancing from their chairs.
The Bradford LOFT (Leap of Faith Together) House is a supportive housing and assisted living program for at-risk adults age 55+. The Bradford location is home to 54 residents and has a partnership with Southlake Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit.
LOFT staff and volunteers are always planning different activities for the clients, many of whom have physical and mental challenges that need to be taken into consideration.
Some activities include daily exercises and meditation classes, outdoor movie nights, Wii bowling, spin art, and bingo to name a few.
“It was definitely a fabulous day at the Bradford House and we would love to do it again,” said Frotten.
