Georgina's 'incredible' Multi-use Recreation Complex opens March 2

Free 'try it' activities will be offered at the MURC throughout the month of March

As the finishing touches are being completed, the Town of Georgina has announced the much anticipated Multi-use Recreation Complex (MURC) will officially open on March 2.

One of the largest projects in the town’s history, the state-of-the-art facility's features include a six-lane, 25-metre pool, two-depth leisure pool, double gymnasium, indoor walking track, multi-use meeting/activity rooms and a library branch, a town news release stated.

Programs and activities for people of all ages and abilities will be offered at the facility located on Woodbine Avenue between Glenwoods Avenue and Ravenshoe Road, the town said.

“This is an exciting time for our community as we get ready to open the doors to the new Multi-use Recreation Complex,” said Mayor Margaret Quirk. “After many years of planning and construction, we are now ready to welcome everyone to the MURC. This incredible building is set to become a true multi-use community hub, offering affordable, quality recreation and library services, and providing options for every member of the family.”

Opening day will feature a ribbon cutting and free activities, while throughout the month a variety of free "try it" activities will be offered, including swimming, basketball, pickleball, and Makerspace technology such as 3D printers, button makers and Cricut machines.

Council is to receive a report on Feb. 7 providing an update on programming for recreation and the Discovery Library branch. The spring session for all programs and lessons will begin in April.

"The Discovery Library branch is your new community living room. This inclusive, multi-generational and multi-purpose space will include expanded programs, quiet study rooms, spaces for people to meet and connect, an outdoor reading garden, and a Makerspace with exciting new tools and technology including a music and video recording studio, a laser cutter, sewing and embroidery machines, a large format printer, and more," the town stated.

The MURC project was built to achieve a gold level of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. Some of the green design components include improved water efficiency, optimized energy performance of heating and cooling systems, the use of sustainable materials, improved indoor air quality, maximized use of daylight and drought-resistant plants.

The MURC will be accessible to all, meeting all building codes and facility accessibility design standards. All three pools feature accessible ramps and the second floor of the building can be reached using a fully accessible elevator.
