Friends of the Library welcome public to first book sale since start of pandemic (8 photos)

First book sale in over two years at the BWG Library

Bookworms rejoiced Friday night as the Friends of the Library welcomed the public back to its first book sale at the BWG Library in over two years.

"This sale, held by the Friends of the Library, is a fundraiser for the library and proceeds can support programs and special events like author visits," said Library Board Chair, Jennifer Harrison.

The atrium and Zima room were packed with people scouring tables of books, DVDs, and puzzles. With most books priced at $1 each, community members were piling up their carts taking advantage of the deals.

Amy Wright has been volunteering with the Friends of the Library for the past 20 years. She along with many of the other volunteers were on hand, restocking tables with freshly unboxed books that had been sitting in storage.

She was pleased see such a large turnout at the sale.

"The library has culled some of their books so there is really good stuff here," she said.

Wright was most excited to see the Young Adult section being heavily picked through; a sign the younger generation is reading more.

"It's selling really well, normally nobody takes it," she said.

Friends Leana Logan and Kamea Nicholson stopped by the sale after hearing about it online. This was their first time attending one of the book sales, and were pleasantly surprised to see so many books at affordable prices.

"I could get more than I originally thought," said Nicholson.

Longtime Friends of the Library volunteer Milt Calder was helping to cash out guests with their purchases. Behind him was a huge stack of boxes, still waiting to be opened and laid out on the tables.

"We will get some of those out tomorrow," he promised.

The Friends of the Library Book Sale is on all weekend at the Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library at 425 Holland St. West.

Saturday, April 23 - 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sunday, April 24 - 1 to 3 p.m.
