Five events you have to check out in South Simcoe this weekend

Winter Weekends will include Winter Fun Day at Innisfil Town Square Feb. 8.

These days, it barely feels like I have a chance to catch my breath.

We’re heading into the thick of sports season in our household — where seemingly every day a kid is coming home from school, stuffing a snack in their face and heading out the door to some kind of training, practice or competition. And while it’s tiring for everyone involved, these are the times that we as parents should be treasuring, where we get to watch our children grow and learn and experience all the emotions of life in front of our eyes.

So, parents, take a moment when you can to slow down and soak it in.

Here’s what’s happening in South Simcoe over the next few days:

Winter Fun Day in Innisfil

The town’s next Winter Weekends event happens Saturday, Feb. 8, at Innisfil Town Square (971 Innisfil Beach Rd.) and inside the Innisfil ideaLAB and Library's Lakeshore branch next door. Enjoy the skating trail, vendor market, food trucks and hot chocolate from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will also be a fishing activity and juggling and skating shows outside, while indoor plans include a drop-in storytime, balloon twisting, keychain making, green-screen photos, a scavenger hunt and a snowman craft. For the full lineup, visit calendar.innisfil.ca.

Film screening for Black History Month

Sounds and Pressure: Reggae in a Foreign Land is a five-part anthology series that chronicles the musical and geographical journeys of Nana McLean, Johnny Osbourne, Leroy Sibbles and Jerry Brown, and duo Roy Panton and Yvonne Harrison. It’ll play continuously in the atrium at the Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library (425 Holland St. W.) Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Through archives, needle drops and interviews with the artists, directors Graeme Mathieson and Chris Flanagan take moviegoers from Kingston to Kensington Market to experience how reggae developed in Canada. Get further information at calendar.townofbwg.com.

Embrace the blues

Visit the Innisfil library’s Cookstown branch (20 Church St.) for the February Blues Festival Saturday from 1 to 3:30 p.m. This event will showcase Joe Poirier. It is free for all ages. For more, visit innisfil.bibliocommons.com.

Dance the night away

The Cookstown and District Chamber of Commerce is hosting the Cookstown Community Dance on Saturday, starting at 8 p.m. It happens at the Cookstown Curling Club (18 Church St.). There will be food, a disc jockey, spot prizes, cash bar, photo booth and 50/50 draw. Admission is $15 per person or $25 for a pair. Get additional details at cookstownchamber.ca

Give fitness a go

Try a free Group Power class Sunday, Feb. 9 at the Innisfil branch of the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka (7315 Yonge St.) as part of the town’s Winter Weekends series. This strength-based workout is set to music and will challenge your whole body in a motivating setting. It runs from 11 a.m. to noon and is open to all Innisfil residents ages 13 and older. Anyone 18-plus is asked to bring photo identification.
