This weekend offers more proof of the important role libraries play within our communities.

Just look at the lineup of events happening — from a music and poetry circle in Bradford to a youth job fair and family storytime in Innisfil, today’s libraries are about so much more than just books, research and quiet reading time. They’ve become cultural centres, where you can learn valuable new skills, explore art, play with your kids and watch a great performance.

If you haven’t been there lately, give your local library another shot. Surely there will be something to pique your interest.

Here’s what’s happening in Bradford and Innisfil this weekend:

Drop-in family storytime

Join staff at the Lakeshore branch of the Innisfil ideaLAB and Library (967 Innisfil Beach Rd.) Saturday, Jan. 25 for the next instalment of this weekly family event. Expect an hour of stories, songs, crafts and playtime. Get to know other families in your community while nurturing your child's love of books and reading. All ages are welcome, though it is considered most suitable for kids six and under. This event is free, it runs from 10 to 11 a.m. and no registration is required.

Why don’t you get a job?

The Innisfil library is hosting a youth job fair on Saturday, Jan. 25, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Lakeshore branch. This exciting event offers residents ages 15 to 25 the opportunity to connect directly with local employers offering summer job opportunities. Participants are encouraged to bring their resumes, cover letters and questions and engage with potential employers. Participating businesses and organizations include Empower Simcoe, Friday Harbour, Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority and Tim Hortons. High school students can also learn about ways to fulfill their community service hours through volunteer opportunities at the library. More details can be found at innisfilidealab.ca.

English conversation circle

If you’ve ever wanted to take the step of improving your language skills in a fun and supportive environment, drop by the Lakeshore library on Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. Led by YMCA newcomer services personnel, the free circle provides a welcoming and inclusive space for learners of all levels. No registration is required, just stop in.

Put a little spice in your life

Eight local groups including the Innisfil Lions and Rotary clubs, Innisfil Christmas Cheer, Community for Kids, Making Change, Innisfil Community Events (ICE), and the Royal Canadian Legion's Innisfil branch will be competing in a chili cook-off Sunday, Jan. 26. For $5 per person, community members are invited to the Lions Hall (982 Innisfil Beach Rd.) at 1 p.m. to sample. They'll then be asked to vote for their favourite chili and the best-dressed table. All proceeds will be donated to the Innisfil Food Bank.

BWG Music and Poetry Circle

What's a music and poetry circle? Come see for yourself at the Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library (425 Holland St. W.) on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. Bring a song, an instrument or a piece of poetry. You can also just sit, relax and enjoy as neighbours share something they're working on. All ages and experience levels are welcome. Further information can be found at calendar.townofbwg.com.
