Sticking around this long weekend?

While you may be tempted to take off for a ski hill or a snowmobile trail, there are plenty of options for fun and engaging activities in South Simcoe. Of course, we’re all so busy running around that I wouldn’t blame you one bit for staying in pajamas and opening up a good book or burying yourself in a video game this weekend.

However this weekend unfolds for you, I hope there’s some relaxation time involved. You've earned it.

Here’s what’s happening in Bradford and Innisfil in the coming days:

Celebrate Black excellence

The Olundara Foundation will host its annual Black History Conference in partnership with the BWG Public Library (425 Holland St. W.) on Saturday, Feb. 15, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors can expect local vendors, cultural music, and an opportunity to network in a free, family-friendly environment. Get more details at calendar.townofbwg.com.

Take the plunge at the YMCA

As part of Innisfil’s Winter Weekends series, the local branch of the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka (7315 Yonge St.) is hosting free open swim sessions for town residents on Saturday. Dive in anytime between noon and 2:30 p.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Anyone 18 and older is required to provide identification. Get more information by calling 705-431-9622 or visiting ymcaofsimcoemuskoka.ca.

Learn about the history of local health care

The Innisfil Historical Society is hosting a special guest speaker at its next monthly meeting at Churchill Community Centre (6322 Yonge St.) on Saturday. Now-retired doctor, Tom Armstrong, will share his medical experiences. Come for the talk, stay for the gingerbread cookies. The event starts at 2 p.m. For more details, email [email protected].

Strap on those skates

Innisfil is hosting a free public skate at the Morgan Russell Memorial Arena and Community Centre (1354 Killarney Beach Rd.) in Lefroy on Saturday from 4 to 5:20 p.m. If you miss out, no worries — Stroud Innisfil Community Centre (7883 Yonge St.) hosts another skate on Sunday, Feb. 16, from 1:30 to 2:50 p.m.

March with the Spartans

Cheer on Innisfil's Junior C hockey team, the Spartans, at its next home game Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the Innisfil Recreational Complex (7315 Yonge St.). Tickets are available at the door, but only cash is accepted. For more information, email [email protected] or visit innisfilspartans.com.
