Two families are safe after an early-morning fire tore through a Trailside Drive home in Bradford West Gwillimbury on Saturday.
A family of five and their pets, as well as a family of four next door, safely evacuated their homes after a fire broke out around 1:20 a.m. in a garage, said BWG Fire Deputy Chief Olaf Lamerz.
“Fire was making its way into the attic space and balcony, with heat and some flames impinging on the residence (next door),” he said. “The four-person crew was able to respond once the call was received and able to contain the garage fire from spreading further in to the residence or to the residence next door.”
The home, near Aishford Road, where the fire began has “extensive fire damage” to the garage interior, roof, balcony and attic, as well as water damage and “mild to moderate smoke damage” to all three floors, Lamerz said.
The home next door has exterior damage to its southwest side and mild smoke damage in a few rooms, he added.
“The fire was determined not suspicious in nature, but due to the extensive damage in the area of origin, an official cause could not be determined,” Lamerz said.
Displaced residents are staying with family and have contacted their insurance providers, he said.
For the call, the fire service used 21 staff members, four fire trucks and a chief’s vehicle, he said.
