There are multiple Remembrance services being held in southern Simcoe County on Sunday, Nov. 10.

This may be a weekend of reflection for many of us.

One where we can contemplate the true cost of war, and pay respect to those who sacrificed so much in the face of danger. It is the time of year when you’ll see poppy boxes in prominent spots at stores and restaurants, the occasional flag hanging from front-yard poles, and the Remembrance parades and services often held together by a greying band of veterans and volunteers.

In addition to a few lighter events happening in South Simcoe this weekend, there are also several Remembrance services taking place. If you can, get out to a couple.

Here’s what’s scheduled in Bradford and Innisfil in the coming days:

Paws for Reading

Local students in grades 1 to 5 are invited to attend the BWG Public Library (425 Holland St. W.) Saturday, Nov. 9 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to read with a four-legged friend. In this new monthly reading program, children will have the chance to practice their skills with a St. John Ambulance therapy dog. This is perfect for readers who need a cute, non-judgmental listener.

English conversation circle

If you’ve ever wanted to take the step of improving your language skills in a fun and supportive environment, drop by the Lakeshore branch of the Innisfil ideaLAB and Library (967 Innisfil Beach Rd.) on Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. Led by YMCA newcomer services personnel, the free circle provides a welcoming and inclusive space for learners of all levels. No registration is required, just stop in.

Innisfil Remembers

Join staff at the Cookstown branch of the Innisfil ideaLAB and Library (20 Church St.) Saturday at 2 p.m. for this special presentation telling the stories of town residents who were involved in the First and Second world wars. This will be a multimedia presentation including video clips and photos, and will end with a short description of some of the resources that can be accessed through the library or at home to learn more about loved ones who served in the armed forces. This event is free. Registration is encouraged but not required. For more, visit innisfil.bibliocommons.com.
