Mayor of East Gwillimbury, Virginia Hackson and players from the East Gwillimbury Eagles were in attendance at the BWG council meeting on Tuesday night to present Bradford Mayor Rob Keffer with a special congratulatory present.
Every year, The Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury and the Town of East Gwillimbury square off in a friendly competition, 'Battle of the Gwillimburies' of who can win the most hockey games in a weekend long tournament, with the Bulldogs wagering 50 pounds of carrots, and the Eagles 50 pounds of potatoes.
This year's tournament took place from Dec. 13-15 at the BWG Leisure Centre and it was the Bradford Bulldogs who came out on top.
“It was a wonderful weekend that we have for hockey," noted Hackson, as she and the EG hockey players handed the mayor their 50 pounds of russet potatoes.
"On behalf of East Gwillimbury, I'd like to congratulate the teams, but more importantly I wanted to make a note that not only on the ice and off the ice, they played well and represented East Gwillimbury really well. They were courteous and respectful and had a lot of fun at the same time. That’s what this is all about," she said.
Mayor Keffer thanked Hackson and the rest of the Eagles team for coming by to drop off their prize.
"The one thing about our municipalities, it’s still our agricultural roots that are the building blocks of our town," he said, noting the potatoes would be donated to the local Helping Hand Food Bank.
Both the Bradford and East Gwillimbury teams posed for a photo with the mayors and council, and of course, the potatoes!
Until next year...
