Sometimes it’s hard to get teens interested in reading, but usually, they love a good movie. Why not bridge the gap with a DVD and graphic novel crossover? The BWG Library has many graphic novels available that support or complement the stories we see on screen. Check out the selection below, or ask a librarian for help. There are hundreds of graphic novels in the BWG Library’s collection!
The Handmaid’s Tale
In this multi-award-winning, bestselling novel, Margaret Atwood has created a stunning Orwellian vision of the near future. This is the story of Offred, one of the unfortunate “Handmaids” under the new social order who have only one purpose: to breed. In Gilead, where women are prohibited from holding jobs, reading, and forming friendships, Offred’ s persistent memories of life in the “time before” and her will to survive are acts of rebellion. Provocative, startling, prophetic, and with Margaret Atwood’s devastating irony, wit, and acute perceptive powers in full force, The Handmaid’s Tale is at once a mordant satire and a dire warning. The BWG Library has the original novel, all three seasons of the latest screen version starring Elizabeth Moss, as well as a graphic novel adaptation available.
Jessica Jones
Jessica Jones graphic novels and shows ignite a firestorm of suspense cloaked in the haze of a noir-inspired slow burn. Haunted by a tragedy that broke her world apart, Jessica Jones settles in Hell's Kitchen, New York City, and opens her own detective agency, called Alias Investigations, with the hope of rebuilding her life and keeping the lights on in her apartment. She discovers that the source of her trauma, a mind-controlling sociopath named Kilgrave, has resurfaced. Follow Jessica’s journey throughout the graphic novels and videos in our collection.
John Wick
When sadistic young thugs senselessly attack a brilliantly lethal ex-assassin, they have no idea that they've just awakened the boogeyman. With New York City as his bullet-riddled playground, Wick embarks on a merciless rampage, hunting down his adversaries with the skill and ruthlessness that made him an underworld legend, in both graphic novels and all three major motion pictures, all available in the BWG Library’s collection.
The Magicians
Based on Lev Grossman's New York Times bestseller, the Magicians stories centre on Quentin, a brilliant grad student chosen to attend Brakebills University for Magical Pedagogy, a secret upstate New York university specializing in magic. He and his twenty-something friends soon discover that the magical fantasy world they read about as children is all too real, and poses a grave danger to humanity. If you have watched all five seasons of the tv show, explore the original novel or the supporting graphic novels, including The Magicians: New Class, with a whole new generation of characters to root for.
