The BWG Diversity Action Group has plans for something a little different, during the month of March.

Instead of a specific cultural celebration or a guest speaker and seminar, the group is launching a Diversity and Inclusion Café.

From 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, anyone interested in diversity, multiculturalism, inclusion and engagement in Bradford West Gwillimbury is invited to drop by the BWG Library’s Zima Room.

It’s all purely casual, like any café or coffee shop – with tables, light refreshments, an opportunity to meet like-minded people, and an invitation to interact, and provide suggestions for future events.

There will even be a singer, providing entertainment. Bradford resident Harcourt Sinclair will be the performer, adding to the ambience of the café with a mix of reggae, gospel, pop and other musical stylings.

“It’s just a social,” said Julie Kumar, co-founder of the BWG Diversity Action Group and current interim secretary. “It’s a drop-in.”

The group is hoping that the Diversity Café will become a regular event.

“We’re hoping, at least this year, to have it every month,” said Kumar. “It’s bringing people together.”

The first Diversity and Inclusion Café will simply be an introduction of the concept, and a request for feedback from the guests. Visitors to the café will be asked to share what diversity means to them, and to Bradford West Gwillimbury – and any ideas they may have for future events and activities sponsored by the group.

“We want to see the feedback,” said Kumar. “We’re going to ask, what else would you like to see?”

The feedback will shape the Diversity and Inclusion Cafés of the future.

“It’s an evolving thing!” she said.
