Calling all frolfers: Newmarket brewery offers sporting solution to pandemic boredom

Market Brewing Company has teed up a new nine-hole frisbee golf course

With this kind of golfing, you don't have to worry about losing your ball.

Newmarket's Market Brewing Company has teed up a new course for the fun sport of “frolfing.”

The brewery, which is located at 17775 Leslie St., unit #4, is taking advantage of the large grassy area behind the business to open a nine-hole frisbee golf course.

"We are very fortunate to have a large back grassy area and thought it would be a great time provide our community with a new activity, and sport that most people are unaware of," said Piers Simpkin.

He said he has played frisbee golf once or twice, so when he saw it on the list of approved outdoor activities he wanted to introduce more people to the less-known sport and do something unique.

The game involves throwing a frisbee at a designated post. Each toss counts as a stroke and like regular golfing, the aim is to hit the post in as few strokes as possible.

It's also a family-friendly sport to get kids out of the house.

Simpkin said since patios can't open yet, the inspiration came from "seeing and realizing the need for people to get out of their homes and participate in safe outdoor actives for physical health, as well as mental health."

To ensure participants stay safe, the brewery is providing sanitized frisbees and people must book a “tee time” in advance for maximum groups of four.

Each group is given only 10 minutes per hole to ensure distancing is maintained on the course.

The local business also makes its own sanitizer, called Bare Hands, which will be available up at every entrance and exit.

Masks are not required out on the course since it's outdoors and spaced out, but players will need to wear one while checking in.

As an added bonus for people who want to support the brewery, the layout of the course includes 4 holes in a licensed area, so people can order an alcoholic beverage that will be delivered to them while they play.

However, Simpkin said it's more about getting the community out and active so that's why they're "not charging an arm and a leg for it." A round of frisbee golf costs $10 per group.

"We are all tired of not being able to get out, so if this mini frisbee golf course gives people some feeling of 'normal' we have done our job," he said.

The original plan was to have the course open until patios reopen in mid-June but if there's a big interest in it, Simpkin said they could leave it open for longer.

"As of right now, we're taking the wave and riding with it," he said. "It's getting some traction."

Under the province’s reopening plan, outdoor dining for up to four people per table will be included in stage one. June 14 has been announced as a tentative date for this to happen.
