CADETS' CORNER: Squadron welcomes new recruits

37 Orville Hand Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron welcomes eight new members

Cadets Corner is a weekly column submitted by the 37 Orville Hand air cadets group.

The swearing in of eight new recruits took place last Thursday evening.

There are over 20 new recruits this year. As a requirement for swearing in, a first-year recruit needs to be in attendance for six weeks. This swearing in is the official entrance to the squadron.

Capt. Holowatyj called upon Cpl. Gomes and Cpl. Aurora to point out they were not in proper dress because they were not wearing the correct ranks. They were promoted from corporal to flight corporal and given their proper ranks.

Air rifle marksmanship is one of the most popular and appealing aspects of the air cadet training program. Many of our cadets have long reaped the benefits of competitive marksmanship at the local headquarters level and it is part of their mandatory training.

All sea, army and air cadets are taught the basics of the air rifle as part of their mandatory training that takes place at the corps and squadron level. 37 Squadron will be taking part in marksmanship training this coming weekend.

A healthy respect for firearms, development of proficient use of rifles for sport and recreational purposes and improvement in self-discipline are additional benefits. Plus, it’s fun.

The 37 Orville Hand Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron continually accepts recruit applications throughout the year. Completed application packages will be accepted both online and in person during our Thursday training nights at Fieldcrest Elementary School from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
