CADETS' CORNER: Bradford cadets get into festive spirit

Members of local squadron celebrate holiday season at recent gathering

Cadets’ Corner is a weekly column submitted by the 37 Orville Hand air cadets group.

Festive vibes were all around last Thursday evening at 37 Orville Hand Air Cadet Squadron.

Level 4s planned and executed a games night for the last training night of 2022. There were Jenga, broken telephone and candy canes, not to be outmatched by the fun, festive sweaters, hats, pants and socks cadets wore to celebrate the holidays and festivities.

While all fun and games were going on upstairs at Fieldcrest Elementary School, a serious interview was being conducted downstairs for four of the Level 5s. A merit review board conducted by outside officers was held to help determine who out of the senior cadets would be promoted to the rank of warrant officer second class and hold the position of squadron warrant officer (SWO), the highest-ranking cadet position at 37 Squadron.

The four senior cadets are all founding cadets and all four flight sergeants have been individually “auditioning” for the position of SWO since October, each one taking the position as acting SWO for three weeks at a time in order for the senior officers to see how they perform in that role. The four candidates will find out who will be promoted in the next few weeks.

The squadron would like to thank the volunteers who took the time to participate in the merit review board: Maj. P. Evelyn, J3 Area elemental adviser (air), central Ontario area (Borden), Capt. M. Charlton, commanding officer, 140 Aurora Squadron, and D. Ahmon, former staff member, 94 Newmarket Squadron.

37 Orville Hand Air Cadet Squadron’s next training night will be on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023 at Fieldcrest Elementary School from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
