Hold and secures have been lifted at three Bradford West Gwillimbury schools today after police located a suspect who had fled on foot.
The South Simcoe and Barrie police services arrested a man without incident at an address on Romanelli Crescent in BWG around 3 p.m., according to a Barrie Police tweet.
The name of the man or what he was arrested for have not been released.
A hold and secure had been in place for a few hours at Chris Hadfield Public School and St. Angela Merici Catholic School, shutting down a polling station at the former.
After it lifted around 2 p.m., a hold and secure was placed at W.H. Day Elementary School for about an hour.
Officers, led by the Barrie Police Service, were searching primarily in the area of Romanelli Crescent and Faris Street between Rutherford Road and 6th Line, said Sue Sgambati, corporate communications specialist for the South Simcoe Police Service.
South Simcoe Police Chief Andrew Fletcher said a warrant was served at a home in the Rutherford Road area.
When the man was approached, he fled on foot.
Fletcher said the man is "known to police" and has a criminal record.
Residents were urged to stay inside while police activity was ongoing, and students and staff at both schools were safe throughout the incident, according to police.
A hold and secure means the building’s doors are locked, so no one can enter or exit, but activities continue inside.
Fletcher was part of a law enforcement torch run in BWG in support of Special Olympics when the hold and secure began, and several other officers who were supposed to join were instead deployed to help in the search for the suspect.
The torch relay at Chris Hadfield Public School took place indoors during the hold and secure.
