BWG plant sale raises $4,000 for Guatemalan orphanage

The sale raised funds for the Misioneros del Camino orphanage and neurological clinic in San Antonio Palopo, Ninos con Bendicion.

Back in 2009, Marcia Talbot went on her first mission trip a Guatemalan orphanage as part of Team CETA led by her friend, Leceta Guibault.

The trip sparked a passion for the work, and for the people of the area. Since then, she and her husband, Stephen, daughter, Meghan, and their friends have made numerous trips, working with the Misioneros del Camino orphanage and neurological clinic in San Antonio Palopo, Ninos con Bendicion, and Mayan families.

Back home, she and her friends have raised funds for the Misioneros del Camino and other programs.

On Saturday, her friend Barbara Watson held her third annual plant sale and fundraiser for Guatemala at her home in Bradford West Gwillimbury.

Visitors were invited to purchase garden plants, baked treats, Guatemalan crafts and works by various vendors, or to contribute to a new adopt-a-butterfly program, designed to preserve Monarch butterflies and raise funds for the mission.

The plant sale, combined with an earlier vendors market and an online auction in April, helped raise more than $4,000 for Guatemalan children this year.

“People are really receptive,” said Watson, thanking generous donors. “It was a whole community thing.”
