Southlake Regional Health Centre faced an unexpected partial roof collapse in a bridge walkway July 6 due to an “improper installation.”

The hospital confirmed that a section of conduit holding computer cabling suspended above the bridge connecting the Medical Arts Building and the main hospital across Davis Drive gave way that evening around 7:30 p.m.

Director of communications and government relations Derek Rowland said the collapse was due to improper work by a third-party vendor.

“Southlake’s facilities, information technology, and security teams responded immediately to contain the space to ensure safety for all staff, patients, and visitors to the hospital,” Rowland said.

Rowland added that operations were not impacted and contractors were able to fully repair the infrastructure the next day.

The hospital is planning for major changes at its facilities in the future. It intends to build a new hospital site elsewhere in the region but also plans to upgrade the existing Newmarket facility to continue providing urgent care, surgical procedures and outpatient medical care.
