Bradford Terry Fox Run raises more than $10K (10 photos)

'It's so wonderful' to surpass fundraising goal in Bradford, said co-organizer of this year's Terry Fox Run

Blue skies and sunshine greeted more than 130 people who registered to walk, run and roll in the 44th annual Terry Fox Run in Bradford on Sunday.

Along with friend Heather Fudge, Laura Vree organized the event at the Bradford and District Memorial Community Centre which included music, food and entertainment in addition to one-, two-, five- and 10-kilometre routes, and which has raised $10,164 for the Terry Fox Foundation and cancer research through both merchandise sales and $8,113 worth of pledges as of Monday morning.

“It’s so wonderful,” Vree said of surpassing the goal of raising $8,000. “It feels really good. It’s such a good cause and a good charity.”

Vree extended her thanks to all the volunteers, participants and local businesses who helped make the event possible.

“We hope you had an amazing time and we are so thankful you were willing to help raise money for this worthy cause,” she said. “All those people who came and gave of themselves just really shows what a great town we live in.”

One particular standout for Vree was local Sam Vitulli’s team Veni Vedi Vici (Latin for “I came, I saw, I conquered,”) which had raised $1,635 as of Monday morning — more than any other team, according Vree.

In addition to “perfect” weather, Vree said the organizers received no complaints from participants and no reports of any injuries or anyone requiring medical attention during the run.

The only minor hiccup was some confusion around the route which resulted in some people on the wrong side of the road at one point, but Vree said everyone made it back to the community centre safely.

Anyone who wasn’t able to attend, can still make a donation by visiting the event website.
