The Danube Seniors Leisure Centre is a quieter place during the summer months.

While the Simcoe Road centre remains open, many clubs and groups take a break in July and August.

The kitchen is closed until Sept. 3; The Varga Group, the Walking Club and the Goldenaires are taking a break; and the Woodworking Shop, while open Mondays during July, will be closed all August.

Not everything comes to a halt.

Chair Fitness is still on its regular schedule, and seniors are also invited to sign up for the Citizens’ Police Academy (seniors version) – an introduction to policing in South Simcoe, which will cover everything from Victim Crisis Assistance Referral Services (VCARS), Ident Unit, Emergency Response, Canine Unit, and the Police Auxiliary, to Internet safety, frauds and scams, road safety, distracted driving, and Community and Home Assistance to Seniors (CHATS).

The academy starts July 16, and meets every Tuesday for six weeks, from 9 a.m. to noon at Holland Gardens retirement residence, 552 Holland St. W. (July 16, 23 and 30, and Aug. 6, 13 and 20.) The academy is free, but please register at the Danube centre by calling  905-775-0612.

Another sign of summer at the Danube centre: the Salad Days Lunch – a light luncheon of salads, cold roasted meats, dessert, tea or coffee. The members-only lunch takes place at the centre on Thursday, July 18 at 11:30 a.m. Tickets are $10 per person and must be purchased in advance. Remember to wear your summery best!

Also coming up in July is another Saturday at the Movies. Members are invited to drop in and enjoy the movie Green Book, starring Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali, on Sat., July 27 at 1 p.m. The film, which won Best Picture at this year's Oscars, is based on a true story. Movie, popcorn and refreshments are available for only $3.
