Bradford West Gwillimbury officially kicked off Black History Month with the raising of the Pan-African flag outside the court house and council chamber on Wednesday, Feb. 1.
"Black history is Canadian history and I am happy that the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury recognizes and celebrates February as Black History Month," said Ward 1. Coun. Cheraldean Duhaney. "Bradford being a growing diverse population, I am elated to be the first Black female councillor in the Town of Bradford's history."
Black History Month is a time to learn about the stories and many important contributions of local Black Canadians to the settlement, growth, and development of Simcoe County, and about the diversity of Black communities in Canada and their importance to the history of this country.
The flag raising was just one of many ways the town plans on celebrating Black history throughout February. Other events include:
