Bradford Legion makes ‘Soup-er’ donation to Helping Hand Food Bank

‘It’s very unexpected and very appreciated,’ says food bank president

The Bradford Legion donated $1,289 to the Helping Hand Food Bank on Sunday.

Two hundred and eight nine dollars of the funds were from the Legion’s 'Soup for the Soul' lunch on Saturday, which offered bowls of warm soups made by Legion cook Alice Organ, Poppy Chair Anne Silvey and volunteer Gavin MacLean.

Around 30 people showed up to the lunch on Saturday, despite the dreary weather conditions.

Guests had the option of trying sample bowls of all three soups, beef and barley, potato and leek, pea with dumpling, or one full bowl for $8.

All money raised went to the food bank, with the Legion adding an extra $1,000 to the donation, which was presented by cheque to the food bank's Carolyn Khan and Susan Cooper on Sunday.

"It's very unexpected and very appreciated," Khan told the Legion members.

The Legion is having another Soup Luncheon on Christmas Eve from 1 - 2 p.m.

$12 for endless bowl of soup, rolls and a dessert.

Soup options include: beef and barley, squash, split pea& ham, and turkey & rice.
