Bradford Farmers’ Market kicks off summer season

The Bradford Farmers' Market will be set up in the library parking lot every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

They’re back!

The farmers, growers, cheese makers and other vendors from last year’s Bradford Farmers’ Market who kept residents supplied with local produce have returned for the 2018 season.

The market reopened May 26 beside the Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library.

Singer Russ Clayton provided the entertainment, and vendors included Innisfil Creek Honey, Everything Maple & More, Lakeview Gardens garden centre, Springh Farms, Say Cheese, The Polish Bakery, European Meat, and Sweet Annabella’s pies and butter tarts all set up their booths.

There was plenty of fresh produce and flowers for shoppers, as well as preserves, cheeses, sauces and dips, honey and beeswax candles, and fresh baking.

It was too early for Lakeview Garden’s own greenhouse-raised tomatoes, but there were Ontario-grown heritage tomatoes and peppers available, a spot of colour among the fresh leafy greens.

Crafter Kate Kim did a brisk business with her hand-crafted bows, headbands and fascinators — a business that started as a hobby.

“I have daughters,” she explained. “The first ones I made for my girls.”

But the constant comments and requests from friends and neighbours led her to launch Kate’s Handicrafts.

BWG Mayor Rob Keffer was joined by Deputy Mayor James Leduc, councillors Ron Orr, Raj Sandhu and Gary Lamb, members of the Bradford Board of Trade, and market management in cutting the ribbon to open the Bradford Farmers’ Market for its 11th season.

“This year looks bigger and better,” said Keffer.

The Bradford Farmers’ Market will be set up in the library parking lot at 425 Holland St. W. every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine.
