A Bradford West Gwillimbury euchre club is looking for more people — and its members are willing to teach you how to play.
“We can teach you. It’s not like it’s rocket science,” said the club’s organizer Doug Bernardi. “It’s a fun group. We don’t take it serious. Everyone has a good time.”
The Friends in Bradford bi-weekly euchre club started nearly five years ago and is now about 35 members strong, with people ranging in age from 35 to 70 years old, Bernardi said.
While about 60 per cent of its members are from BWG, some participants come from as far as Innisfil and Newmarket, he said, adding the group is a mix of married couples, single people, and men and women.
All members take turns hosting euchre nights, and if anyone is unable to host, they get put on a spares list for upcoming games.
All new members are invited to come out for a night of euchre to see if they like the group, and, if they do, they are asked to host the next game night, Bernardi said.
All the hosts have to do is supply the venue, and everyone brings their own snacks and drinks.
Since the games are often held in people’s homes, anyone interested in joining the group must fill out an application form and be willing to get a security check done, Bernardi said.
As well, there is no membership fee for the club, which also hosts holiday parties and summer barbecues, he said.
No euchre experience is necessary to join the group, but some understanding of the game is needed. Club members can meet with new players before game nights to teach them the rules, Bernardi said.
“Everybody just has a good time. You can barely hear the people at your table — everyone’s hooting and hollering,” Bernardi said. “We’re always looking to expand.”
HOW TO JOIN:
The club is holding a euchre tournament April 13 at the Royal Canadian Legion in Newmarket, but any new members must email [email protected] and fill out an application before being able to play.
