Last month’s Back to the 80s dinner and dance at the Royal Canadian Legion in Bradford West Gwillimbury did more than provide guests with an evening out and a night of nostalgia.

It provided inspiration.

The Thursday Night Fun Darts League, when it met at the legion on March 7 adopted an 80s theme.

Organizer Shelly Christadler freely admitted that her inspiration came from “our 80s-theme party.” Mini skirts and bling, plaid pants and mullets, grunge – members dressed up for the evening of darts.

There was also a fundraising element to the night. League members were asked to contribute an extra twoonie to play, with the money going to a local charity.

“I wanted to raise some money for Blue Door Shelters,” explained Christadler.

For more than 35 years, Blue Door Shelters have provided emergency shelter for the homeless or those at risk of homelessness, in York Region and South Simcoe. Leeder Place for families, Porter Place for single men, and Kevin’s Place for male youth not only provide accommodation, but also programs, counselling and access to resources for its clients.

The Thursday Night league meets every Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Bradford legion, 115 Back St., until April, and then the playoffs begin. For more information, see bradfordlegion521.community.
