Every year, Decorator’s Edge in Bradford hosts an annual toy drive. For more than 20 years, Lawrence and Jeff Hellings, brothers and owners of the paint store, strive to make a difference in the community.
It started in 1991 when Jeff, who was a member of Bradford Rotary Club, started collecting toys through the store for the Bradford Rotary Toy Drive.
In 2013, when the Bradford Rotary club dissolved, the siblings opted to continue running the toy drive out of the store; they donate them to Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in Barrie and Christmas 4 Kids in Innisfil.
“We do it every year for the kids who are less fortunate and in need,” says Lawrence. “We’re known for it now and everyone knows to come by here and drop off toys.”
The toy drive usually begins around the time of the Santa Claus Parade and goes until Christmas Eve, and the yearly support blows the Hellings away.
“The support has been amazing,” Lawrence said. “The crib gets filled up three or four times some years and spills out onto the floor.”
The crib in the store is currently filled with toys for the second time already this holiday season thanks to the community's support, which, given the struggles people are going through as a result of the pandemic and the high cost of living, the Hellings are even more elated about.
“Things are a little slower this year because things are a little bit tighter,” said Lawrence. “Support has been great and it’s really cool to see.”
Those who want to donate to the toy drive are encouraged to stop by Decorator’s Edge at 284 Holland St. W.
