A parade of cars pulled up in the parking lot of the Bradford Baptist Church Sunday morning to congratulate Pastor Tim Walker and his wife Jackie for 35 years of service with the church.
The celebration was a surprise organized by Kathy Ailles, the church administrative assistant who sent out a mass email letting all members know about the event.
Tim and Jackie took over the Bradford Baptist Church (BBC) in 1985.
“It was the day after the big tornado hit the Holland Marsh,” remembered Tim.
The couple met and married in Manitoba before moving to Ontario where Tim began seminary school.
During his studies, he worked part time at his pastor father’s church in St. Catherine’s.
As Tim completed his Masters in youth ministry, he was hired on part time with the Baptist church for two years before becoming the full time pastor.
“It’s a small church,” said Tim. “We currently have about 120 members… lots of memories over the years”.
Members pulled up in the driveway of the church holding signs and ringing bells as they passed out cards to congratulate both Tim and Jackie on their success with the church.
“We accidentally found out about the surprise, confessed Jackie. “But we are so happy to see everyone!”
Each car that pulled up spent a few minutes sharing stories and memories with the couple.
“I was five years old when Pastor Tim and Jackie took over the church,” said Matt Martin, now age 41 and still a member.
Martin created a sign for Tim and Jackie with pictures of himself and siblings from 1985, contrasting the difference over the years.
“Wow, have times ever changed!” expressed Jackie. “I can’t believe how little (they were)!”
The Walkers were also visited by Frank Jonkman, former Mayor of Bradford, as well as members from Christian Horizons.
“It’s an exciting year,” expressed Jackie, also noting the couple will be celebrating 37 years of marriage in September.
The church, located on 10th Sideroad in Bradford, continues to have online virtual services for its members and welcomes guests to visit their website here.
