A 45-year-old Barrie man has been saddled with a $1,000 fine for not following quarantine rules during the pandemic.
Barrie police received an alert from Public Health Canada on Thursday to follow up with a local man who was to remain in quarantine for two weeks after returning home from the Carribean.
Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon said there was initially no answer at the man’s house.
Officers on the evening shift investigated and the man was subsequently fined.
“It’s important for people to realize that people are watching out there,” said Leon. “They (police) were able to determine this individual last weekend had people over to his residence.”
The man is accused of having house guests while under quarantine.
The rule, Leon said, is that anyone returning to Canada must go straight home and isolate for two weeks without having contact with others to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The man’s quarantine period does expire at the end of the weekend.
In addition to the fine, he must pay a victim surcharge, so his total bill adds up to $1,125.
Leon said this is the second time city police have fined a Barrie resident with breaching quarantine rules.
