A Barrie doctor charged in connection with the death of his wife nearly three years ago is no longer facing criminal prosecution, but isn’t currently practising medicine.
Charlotte Coughler, 33, who was a nurse at Mackenzie Health in Richmond Hill, died Jan. 30, 2020. Her husband, Dr. Coryn Hayman, was charged with failing to provide the necessaries of life and criminal negligence causing death the following month.
Hayman, who was 46 at the time, was an emergency physician at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) in Barrie and was listed as a specialist in family medicine by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. The college restricted his licence to practise in 2020.
Following a preliminary hearing earlier this year, Hayman was committed to trial on just the charge of failing to provide the necessaries of life. He was discharged of criminal negligence causing death.
But in a subsequent court appearance in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Crown announced that charge would be stayed.
Hayman agreed not to pursue reissuing of his medical licence, but expects to eventually return to the practice of medicine, according to court documents.
