All that glitters is golden at the new Bradford Jewellery by Peter Dykie (11 photos)

In a double celebration, the town's longest-serving councillor marked his 35th year in business and the grand opening of a new store

Peter Dykie Jr.’s new store at 9 Holland St. E. has lots of bling, from the crystal chandeliers to the contents of the display cases.

Which is totally appropriate for a jewellery store.

Dykie held a double celebration on Saturday, marking both his 35th year in business, and the grand opening of his new store, Bradford Jewellery by Peter Dykie.

“We started in 1984,” in a small space beside what is now 3 Scoops Ice Cream, he said. The store moved to 3 Holland, then 5 Holland and finally 9 Holland St. E., all within the downtown core – weathering several recessions and a devastating robbery.

“I can’t believe 35 years have gone by,” Dykie said. “From the bottom of my heart, thanks to everybody.”

He marked the occasion with refreshments, 50-per-cent-off sales, and a ribbon-cutting, with staff, special guests and customers.

“This speaks to the community we have,” said York-Simcoe MP Scot Davidson, who presented Dykie a certificate, praising the long-time business owner and long-serving Bradford West Gwillimbury councillor for his commitment to the community.

“He always puts people first,” Davidson said, telling Dykie, “I hope I’m here for your 50th.”

Ryan Charron, speaking for the Bradford Board of Trade, noted Dykie has “done so much for businesses, not only in the downtown core but throughout the town.”

Dykie is the longest-serving councillor on Bradford West Gwillimbury council, and he has often turned his store into an impromptu meeting place to speak with constituents and listen to their concerns. He has also been a champion of downtown revitalization.

“Over the years, we’ve seen a lot of stores revitalized,” said Dykie, adding he had a number of opportunities to move to the west end, but chose to remain as part of a vibrant downtown.

“The way that he listens, the way that he solves problems – he’s so well-respected in the community,” said Mayor Rob Keffer, recognizing Bradford Jewellery for both “great customer service and quality craftsmanship.”

Bradford Jewellery by Peter Dykie offers Thomas Szabo jewellery, Chamilia charms, a full range of gold chains and jewellery, watches, plus “custom jewellery and still a lot of cash for gold, in this economy,” Dykie said
