“They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.” — Laurence Binyon
Soldiers who died fighting for their country and did so bravely are going to live on forever. They are never going to be forgotten. At the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, we will remember them. Remembrance day is commemorated on Nov. 11 each year and marks the end of World War 1 at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918.
What do we mean when we say lest we forget? This phrase honours the soldiers who put their lives on the line to fight for their country so we could have the freedom we have today. It honours the mothers, wives, children, and families that spent their days wondering if their loved ones will make it back home. The Canada we see today is built from the sacrifices of these soldiers. We must remember the price they paid to fight for the dream of a better place. Lest we forget.
The Holy Prophet Muhammad (founder of Islam) stated, “Love of one’s country is part of faith.” A fundamental teaching of Islam is to show loyalty to your nation. Muslims around the world have a religious and moral duty to show complete loyalty to their nation and this includes a respect for those who have lost their lives trying to protect their country.
The head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community reminded the members, “Demonstrating loyalty to one’s country of residence can establish and spread peace. As a loyal citizen it is necessary to be a part of one’s country and share in its grief.” Every year, the Ahmadiyya Muslim community pays its contribution on Remembrance Day by conducting fundraisers and spreading awareness about the importance of Remembrance Day.
It is our duty to honour everyone who made sacrifices for our freedom today. On Remembrance Day let’s acknowledge these soldiers’ bravery and determination. On Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. stand with the nation for a moment of silence for these soldiers.
