There are a total of seven candidates running in the upcoming Ward 2 by-election in November.

The councillor position became available following the unexpected death of Councillor Gary Baynes in July.

In the Sept. 1 meeting of BWG Council, town staff presented a report highlighting the two options for filling the vacant seat: appointment of a councillor or by-election.

The report noted some of the concerns surrounding the by-election option including high costs, low voter turnout in past elections, and the worries about campaigning during a pandemic.

Council acknowledged the points made by staff, but in the end decided a by-election would be the most fair option. Bradford residents had until Friday at 2 p.m. to express their interest in running as a by-election candidate.

There are seven candidates registered to run (in order of date filed):

1. Munawar Chudary

2. Stephanie Sinclair

3. Brian Carruthers

4. Gavin MacLean

5. Natasha Leskiw

6. Jonathan Scott

7. Tiana Putric

Voting will take place from Nov. 27 to Dec.7, 2020 with votes being conducted by Internet and phone.

BradfordToday will be doing profile pieces in the near future for readers to learn more about each candidate and their platforms.
