I was troubled to see a photo in The Globe and Mail (Feb. 27) captioned, “Doug Ford supporters at the Toronto Congress Centre,” featuring James Leduc, the mayor of Bradford West Gwillimbury.

While municipal politics in Ontario is officially non-partisan, Mayor Leduc’s prominent presence at what was clearly a pro-Ford event raises concerns about his priorities as an elected official.

Mayors are expected to represent all constituents, not just those who align with a particular political leader. When a mayor aligns himself so publicly with the premier, it creates the perception that he is more interested in building political favour than in governing fairly for all residents. Bradford West Gwillimbury is home to people of diverse political beliefs, and their mayor should not be seen as playing partisan politics.

This kind of coziness with the premier begs the question: Is Mayor Leduc focused on municipal issues, or is he angling for something more? Bradford residents deserve transparency and assurance that their mayor is working for them — not for the premier’s approval.
