Every year at Holy Trinity High School, students are offered the opportunity to bake cupcakes in exchange for community service hours.
Dubbed simply, ‘Cupcake Day’ the tradition was started by teacher Chiara Ferragine initially as a fundraiser for the SPCA, but is now done for the enjoyment of staff and students.
The event on Monday coincided with National Cupcake Day, and was catered by 31 student and staff bakers, who spent 140 hours making 93 dozen or 1,116 cupcakes. One student, Adrian Sist had made 20 dozen cupcakes himself.
“The goal is to have one cupcake for every staff and student in the school, and every year we always exceed that goal,” said Ferragine. “We are also fortunate to always have someone who makes gluten-free and dairy-free cupcakes, so no one is left out.”
The tradition allows for students to have a way to be more involved in the school community, while offering a chance to earn some of the community service hours that are mandatory to graduate.
