Innisfil residents may have noticed sculptural works and art installations in some unlikely places this past week.
Two feline sculptures by local artist Gail Esau prowl the shelves at the Cookstown ideaLAB & Library.
Human-sized cut-out sculptures by Jeanette Luchese stand inside the council chambers, and in second-floor lounge at the Innisfil town hall.
There are works at the Innpower offices, Stroud library, and Lakeshore branch of the Innisfil ideaLAB.
It’s all part of the new Innisfil Sculpture Group’s celebration of International Sculpture Day April 27, a global day recognizing the power of sculpture in public spaces, established by the non-profit International Sculpture Centre, located in New Jersey.
The Innisfil Sculpture Group approached the Innisfil ideaLAB & Library, looking for support for a town-wide exhibit of sculptural works.
“Innisfil has a shortage of cultural spaces,” noted librarian and manager of the Cookstown branch, Susan Baues. “We had to use the assets we have.”
That meant setting up the sculptures in libraries and other municipal spaces, including the town hall.
“We were pleased to support them,” Baues said. “It’s just so exciting.”
Participating artists include Esau, Luchese, Tim Laurin, Mary Celluci, Denis Bolohan, and Christina Luck, founders of the Innisfil Sculpture Group.
The works will be on display from April 23 to May 4. The culmination of the International Sculpture Day exhibit will be a Sculpture Workshop at the Lakeshore Branch of the library, 967 Innisfil Beach Rd., this Sunday – “like a pop-up cultural event,” said Baues.
From 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on April 28, Cookstown artist Christina Luck will lead the free drop-in workshop. There will also be an opportunity to meet the artists, and learn more about their installations and work.
