Iconic Newfoundland folk-rock singer-songwriter and Magna Hoedown fan favourite Alan Doyle will headline York Region’s largest annual fundraiser set for the weekend of Sept. 13 to 14, event organizers announced today.
Doyle, best known as the lead singer of Newfoundland’s folk-rock band, Great Big Sea, will help kick off the Hoedown festivities on Friday, Sept. 13. Also lined up for the opening night’s entertainment is country music performances by the Magna Hoedown Showdown finalists, food trucks and a craft beer fest.
Doyle’s spirit of giving and generosity, along with his incredible musical talents, are a perfect match with what the Magna Hoedown is all about, organizers said in a statement. He first headlined the Hoedown in 2016.
In 2017, the now solo artist was named a Member of the Order of Canada “for his contributions to the musical traditions of his home province and for his commitment to numerous local charitable initiatives”.
Doyle says he is “the luckiest guy I’ve ever even heard of. This was all I ever wanted, a life in the music business, singing concerts”.
The Magna Hoedown is the largest annual fundraiser in York Region, having raised over $13 million in its 31-year history. This year, 20 York Region charities, non-profits, and community groups have been selected as recipients of the Hoedown proceeds. Collectively, these organizations support over 116,000 York Region residents.
The first 500 attendees in the event Tent on the expansive front lawn of Magna International on Sept. 13 in Aurora will receive complimentary craft-beer tasting tickets.
