A man accused in a disturbing Barrie-area assault on Christmas Day in 2023 has had his case put over until next week.

Sidney Devine, who was 18 at the time of the incident, is in custody, but was unable to attend his court appearance in Barrie on Monday because he was in Bradford court on another matter.

He's scheduled to return to court in Barrie on Feb. 10.

Devine’s co-accused, a young offender who cannot be identified, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 28 months last month.

In that sentencing hearing, court heard evidence that the victim was left disfigured and may have permanent disabilities. The court also heard evidence that the young offender and Devine recorded video of the assault.

The young offender’s sentencing hearing was notable for other reasons because the court heard that he was found with what appeared to be evidence he was engaging in a murder conspiracy in connection to an ongoing murder trial while awaiting sentencing.

Devine is not accused in the conspiracy case, nor have the charges against him for the Christmas Day assault been tested in court.
