The Highway 401 on ramps at the south end of the Hanlon Expressway will not open Friday as expected, as clean up of the jet fuel spill extents into next week.
On Wednesday, the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) told GuelphToday that the on ramps would reopen the end of the week, but late Friday sent an update that the work would extend into next week.
Currently, drivers can exit the 401 on to the Hanlon but the Hanlon southbound is closed at County Road 34. Drivers seeking to merge on to the 401 are being detoured to Brock Road.
Clean-up work continues in partnership with Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks to clean-up the aviation fuel spill that occurred in the early morning hours on Sunday, said a spokesperson for MTO in an email Friday.
"Based on further investigation, the clean-up will extend into next week. At this time, we don't have a timeframe for expected clean-up completion,"
The current lane restrictions on Highway 401 will be lifted for public safety and in preparation for a winter storm expected this weekend.
"We continue to make every effort to complete the work as quickly as possible," said the spokesperson.
