Man charged in connection to Tuesday's heavy police presence in Alliston

A family dispute caused quite the stir in downtown Alliston Tuesday night.

Nottawasaga OPP officers were dispatched to a residence on Victoria Street in Alliston April 30 after an individual allegedly left the home with a knife in-hand following an altercation.

“Officers cordoned off the area for public safety with the assistance of the Emergency Response Unit (ERT), Canine (K9) and Aviation Support,” Const. Jacquelyn Beaulieu said in a media release issued May 1. 

Late Tuesday evening, the OPP issued a public advisory over social media in relation to the incident, noting an increased police presence in the downtown area and requesting nearby residents stay indoors. 

As a result of their investigation, a New Tecumseth man, 39, was charged with assault. The accused was held for a bail hearing.

“There is no longer a threat to public safety,” Beaulieu said. “The Nottawasaga OPP is committed to serving our province by protecting its citizens, upholding the law and preserving public safety.”
